What to Expect During an ADHD Evaluation
Learn what happens during an ADHD evaluation, what information may be reviewed, and how Tinka Health Services supports careful treatment planning.
A careful evaluation looks at the full picture
An ADHD evaluation is not just a quick checklist. A psychiatric provider may ask about current concerns, childhood history, school or work functioning, relationships, sleep, mood, anxiety, substance use, medical history, medications, and family mental health history.
The goal is to understand whether ADHD is likely, whether another concern may better explain the symptoms, or whether more than one issue may be present. This helps create a treatment plan that is safer and more useful.
What may be discussed
Adults may be asked about long-standing patterns, job performance, daily organization, driving, finances, and relationships. For children and teens, caregivers may discuss school behavior, homework, routines, developmental history, and feedback from teachers when available.
- When attention or impulsivity concerns began and how long they have been present
- Where symptoms happen, such as home, school, work, or social settings
- How symptoms affect responsibilities, relationships, safety, mood, and confidence
When to consider getting help
Consider scheduling an evaluation when symptoms are persistent, causing distress, or affecting important parts of life. Evaluation can also help if you have tried self-help strategies but still feel stuck.
